Cardiol Therapeutics Expands Phase III Heart Study After Enrollment Milestone
Cardiol Therapeutics has hit its initial 110-patient enrollment target for the MAVERIC Phase III trial ahead of schedule, prompting the steering committee to expand the study to 150 participants. The decision follows a blinded review that revealed fewer pericarditis recurrences among patients than researchers originally anticipated.
The company, based in Toronto, confirmed that the expansion aims to maintain the statistical power required to produce a definitive assessment of CardiolRx™. While the lower-than-expected recurrence rate is viewed as an encouraging clinical observation, it necessitates a larger sample size to ensure the trial successfully captures enough events to measure the drug's efficacy in preventing future episodes. Topline results are now expected in mid-2027, shifting from the previously stated Q1 2027 timeline.
President and CEO David Elsley stated that the company remains in a strong financial position, with sufficient capital to fund the trial’s completion and a cash runway extending into Q1 2028. The MAVERIC study continues to evaluate the drug’s ability to modulate inflammasome pathways, which are critical in treating recurrent pericarditis—a condition characterized by debilitating chest pain and frequent hospitalizations. The trial’s primary efficacy analysis focuses on the time elapsed before a first new episode of recurrence, mirroring the standards used for existing FDA-approved therapies.
