RunVermont Overhauls Marathon Route and Adds Half Marathon for 2027
A decade of feedback has prompted a total course transformation for Burlington's signature race. On May 30, 2027, the M&T Bank Vermont City Marathon will debut a simplified, single-loop layout and, for the first time in the event’s history, a standalone half marathon option for participants.

The redesigned route eliminates the complex figure-eight layout that previously caused congestion and athlete confusion. By removing all at-grade Amtrak rail crossings, organizers have effectively neutralized the risk of train-related delays impacting official race times. Despite these structural shifts, the course retains its signature net-zero elevation profile, now supported by an optimized wave start system designed to further streamline the field.
Anthea Dexter-Cooper, Executive Director of RunVermont, described the overhaul as an effort to prioritize the athlete experience through direct community feedback. Alongside the new half marathon, the event will continue to host its traditional 2-person and 3-5 person relays, sponsored by Darn Tough Vermont. Registration for all 2027 categories opens October 1, 2026, at 6:00 AM EDT. Heidi Stumpff, Regional President of M&T Bank, noted that the expansion is intended to broaden accessibility while providing a significant boost to the local Burlington economy.
