Costa Rica Launches Interactive Map to Showcase National Heritage

Ninety-two percent of Costa Rica’s territory lies beneath the waves, a fact often overlooked by those focused solely on its terrestrial beauty. A new digital platform, Discover Costa Rica, now bridges this gap, providing a comprehensive, interactive map that details the nation’s vast marine, cultural, and geographic landscape.

Developed by the essential COSTA RICA country brand in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Worship, the University of Costa Rica’s Center for Research in Marine Sciences and Limnology (CIMAR-UCR), and the UCR School of Geography, the platform offers an intuitive gateway to the country's diverse assets. Available in both English and Spanish, the site serves as a verified repository for students, researchers, and tourists alike.

Users can navigate through layers of data ranging from volcanic ecosystems and national parks to historical milestones, such as San José’s early adoption of electric public lighting. The initiative emphasizes the nation's maritime dimension, providing scientific evidence on biodiversity to foster conservation awareness. According to Dr. Eddy Gómez Ramírez, Director of CIMAR-UCR, the platform uses visual storytelling to spark curiosity about the organisms inhabiting Costa Rican waters.

Adriana Acosta, Director of the essential COSTA RICA brand, notes that the project is designed to shape collective identity by making academic research accessible to younger generations. The tool functions as both an educational resource and a complement to the Costa Rica Blue initiative, reinforcing the country's commitment to promoting its natural and cultural heritage on a global stage.
