B&W Quality Growers Upgrades Water Spinach Distribution

Fellsmere-based B&W Quality Growers is rolling out a new 10-count water spinach pack, a strategic packaging shift aimed at streamlining cold-chain logistics. The move allows retailers to store the leafy green at standard temperatures alongside other produce, addressing long-standing handling hurdles for the delicate, hollow-stemmed vegetable.

The new format utilizes individually bunched and PLU-banded greens, a design choice intended to boost airflow and preserve freshness during transit. By insulating the product within the cold chain, the company enables storage at 36-38°F, aligning water spinach handling with common industry practices for leafy greens. This modification simplifies inventory management for distributors who previously faced complications due to the plant's specialized requirements.

Todd Gosule, EVP of Sales and Marketing, noted that the company’s status as a fully licensed and certified grower has been critical to expanding the vegetable's reach beyond traditional Asian culinary circles. As demand grows across North American retail and foodservice channels, the company is positioning its supply chain to support integration into diverse menus, ranging from Italian to African-inspired dishes. With a history dating back to 1870 and a record of zero product recalls, the grower continues to leverage its food safety protocols to secure its position as a primary supplier of water spinach.
