Michigan-Based Birdy the Drink Wins Bronze in San Francisco
A 3% ABV wine spritzer from Northern Michigan has secured a Bronze Medal at the 2026 San Francisco Ready-to-Drink Competition. The Hibiscus Lime Rosé from the woman-founded brand Birdy the Drink competed against over 400 entries, challenging the industry perception that low-alcohol beverages must sacrifice authentic wine flavor.
The accolade comes from The Tasting Alliance, the same organization responsible for the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. For co-founder Callie Gruman Furste, the win validates a years-long effort to move away from the thin, juice-like profiles that often plague the low-alcohol market. By partnering with Bonobo Winery and winemaker Cornel Olivier, the company uses local Michigan grapes to craft a product intended to bridge the gap between social drinking and active lifestyles.
Beyond the medal, the brand highlights a broader shift in consumer habits. With the global low- and no-alcohol market exceeding $11 billion in 2025 and wine-based RTDs growing by 14%, drinkers are increasingly seeking options that avoid the compromise of high sugar or high alcohol. At under 100 calories and gluten-free, the spritzer is positioned not as a mocktail, but as a functional alternative for those who want to remain sharp for the following day’s commitments. The product is currently distributed across Michigan by Great Lakes Wine and Spirits and available via direct-to-consumer channels.
