Universal Music Group revenue climbs as Downtown consolidation takes hold

Universal Music Group reported a 10.5% revenue increase to €3.29 billion for the second quarter of 2026, bolstered by the integration of Downtown Music Holdings and the impact of updated streaming agreements. Despite this top-line growth, the company faced margin pressure and a decline in merchandising performance.

The music giant's recorded music subscription revenue rose by 14.3% year-over-year, benefiting from both the Downtown acquisition and the implementation of Streaming 2.0 pricing models. While revenue growth remained strong across core segments, the consolidated adjusted EBITDA margin slipped to 20.5%, a 2.2 percentage point decrease compared to the same period last year. This contraction was attributed to higher corporate overhead, increased professional fees, and a loss within the merchandising division.

For the first half of 2026, UMG saw total revenue reach €6.19 billion, a 5.3% increase over the previous year. The company's net profit attributable to equity holders saw a sharp decline to €222 million, largely impacted by the revaluation of investments in listed companies. Looking ahead, the board declared an interim dividend of €0.24 per share, maintaining its commitment to a payout policy of at least 50% of adjusted net profit. CEO Lucian Grainge emphasized that the firm is focused on refining its execution and leveraging its vast IP portfolio to navigate the shifting digital ecosystem.
