UMass Nurses Demand Contract Reforms in Show of Solidarity
More than 80% of registered nurses at UMass Memorial Medical Center’s University Campus delivered a signed petition to CEO Dr. Eric Dickson on Monday. The document pressures hospital leadership to resolve long-standing disputes over staffing levels, workplace safety, and the retention of experienced medical staff.
The collective action follows an informational picket held in March, which signaled rising frustration regarding chronic staffing shortages. Union representatives from the Massachusetts Nurses Association (MNA) argue that the high rate of participation demonstrates a unified front among frontline caregivers who feel their previous concerns have been largely ignored at the bargaining table.
Margaret McLoughlin, a co-chair of the MNA bargaining committee, emphasized that the petition represents a cross-section of the University Campus workforce demanding systemic changes. Fellow co-chair Ellen Smith reiterated that the path forward requires the health system to prioritize investments in its nursing staff to ensure a safer environment for both patients and employees. As the largest not-for-profit health system in Central Massachusetts, UMass Memorial Health now faces mounting pressure to address these recruitment and retention hurdles before they further disrupt care standards.
